DESCRIPTION:What: [Rescheduled] MLK Day of Service – Cooper River Park and Edison Woods Trash Pick-up and Invasive Plants Removal. A volunteer event for the entire family! Dress for the weather. You will be working around thorny plants\, so wear rugged clothing you won’t care too much if it gets stuck. Volunteers will be provided heavy-duty work gloves\, trash bags\, grabbers and rakes. \nPlease bring: 1) Hand pruners\, sturdy screwdrivers or crowbars for prying and small hand saws to cutback the invasive vines. Please put your name on them and bring them along. (These are all optional items. Just bring if you have). 2) Refillable water bottle to stay hydrated 3) Signed waivers. We will have some on-hand but appreciate if volunteers bring their own signed by the appropriate adult (will be provided once signed up). \nWhere: Haddon Township side of Cooper River Park\, Intersection of South Park Dr. and Saginaw Ave. (just east of Cuthbert Blvd). Plenty of parking on side streets. – I \nWhy: Both trash and invasive plants can harm local wildlife\, plant diversity and water quality of our waterways – plus\, it just looks bad. DESCRIPTION:Volunteer Event: Removing Invasive English Ivy at Saddler’s Woods Date: Sunday\, December 14th Time: 1pm – 3pm Hosted by: CRI – Environmental Committee \nJoin us for a hands-on volunteer day at beautiful Saddler’s Woods\, where we’ll work together to protect native trees by removing invasive English ivy. This fast-growing vine can overwhelm tree trunks\, block sunlight\, and weaken forest health – your help makes a real difference! \nVolunteers will receive on-site instructions and safety guidance\, including how to properly identify English ivy\, safely remove vines without damaging trees\, and dispose of plant material to prevent regrowth. \nWhat to Expect: Light to moderate outdoor physical activity Training provided-no prior experience needed \nWhat to Bring: Tools: sharp pruners\, hand saws\, large loppers (compound loppers\, if available) – All tools should be washed in hot soapy water afterwards! Also\, don’t worry if you don’t have these tools\, we can share! Gloves and clothing that can be washed in hot soapy water afterwards (to remove potential poison ivy residue) Tick repellent (as a precaution since we are going off trail) Sturdy shoes or boots * Water bottle \nCome out with an open mind\, learn something new\, meet fellow environmental stewards\, and help protect the ecological health of Saddler’s Woods. DESCRIPTION:Let’s work together to beautify our community and make a positive impact on the environment. No experience is necessary! All ages are welcome but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. We have extra gardening gloves but feel free to bring your own! Any extra tools may be helpful! We’re starting the morning off with a community-wide tree planting effort followed by replacing an area of grass with a pollinator garden. Come for a little while or stay the entire time! \nWHEN: 9am-12pm For the Trees! Meet at 301 W. Clinton Ave.\, Oaklyn for tree planting directions. 11am-2pm For the Pollinators! Meet at 20 W. Clinton Ave.\, Oaklyn \nWHY: Street trees offer significant environmental\, economic\, social\, and health benefits by absorbing air pollutants and carbon dioxide\, reducing stormwater runoff and flooding\, providing cooling shade to lower energy costs and mitigate the urban heat-island effect\, improving air quality which can reduce respiratory illnesses\, increasing property values and fostering community connections\, and creating more aesthetically pleasing and calmer streetscapes!
